handling adult python

Jason-FM Jun 24, 2004 10:36 PM

hey i just got a 3 yr old ball python. the owner that had it first handled it the first yr and left it a lone the other two yrs. the snake is a little bit hard to handle because it likes to bite most of the time. if u can help and give me some ideas on how to get around handling it more i would be really happy.

and one more thing the snake has some open scars around the mouth, so if u can help me find away to clean it that would be cool.

Well as far as handling goes, there are a couple of tricks I can recommend. I have heard you can place an old shirt of yours in the tank for a few days. This will familiarate the snake with your scent. Then buy a pair of gloves or band-aids...lol. Escentially handling will be your best bet. It always works for us. Just be patient and the snake will calm with time.

About the snakes mouth, we have a boa with a severe scar on its mouth. What we do is bath the snake first to make sure the wound is clean then one of us holds its head while the other puts neosporin on a q-tip and put it on the snakes wound. The scar is healing well and we have found no ill effects from the neosporin.

Hope this helps,

SA

if i get a new ball that's testy for the first week or two I just open the container for a few minutes a day & pet the lower third of the snake & this sounds dumb & i'll prob get ripped on but I also talk to it in a very calm voice..after a week or two of that I start handling 10 minutes or so a day i try to get it not to be head shy by opening my fingers & having the snake slither through & I'll lighty close my fingers some so the snake's head keeps coming in contact with my hands & after awhile that seem to get them to come around for me anyway

he could be bitey because of the wounds, also place him on white paper towel, he could have mites. I would get him checked out by a vet to find out if he has internal parasites.

Neosporin NON medicated (original formula) would work, but if it is really bad have the vet check it out.
