Is this hatchling a RES?

MissMiniZoo Jun 25, 2004 04:01 AM

I started looking more closely at my new turtle and now I'm wondering if it is actually a RES or not. He/she has blue eyes and an interesting pattern on the plastern. Most RESs that I am finding pics of have yellow eyes. Could this hatchling be a Cumberland Slider or some type of hybrid??

Here is another pic of him/her. It does not have a red patch behind its eye...it is more yellow orange than red. What's the deal?

Definately a RES! Mine has blue/green eyes also! Aren't they beautiful??? Especially when the light his them, they seem almost like cat eyes because they're so reflective. As for the not-so-red patch... The color will vary from bright vivid red to dull orange yellow or orange red. Mine has a bright orange patch and my grandmother's (yes my grandma has a turtle...hehehe) is very bright red-orange.

My youngest has that exact type of pattern on the bottom. When I first got him I was always looking at that because it's so different from the others. I never thought anything of it, though..

He looks normal to me, both of mine have bluish green eyes and that same pattern. The orange patch can vary, but if there is one, you have a RES.

Hello:
The baby you have is pure RES. Not all babies have brilliant red on the neck though some do. The red will intensify with age usually. I just inherited two babies with very little red on them.
Have a Great Day!!!

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm sure it was a silly question to all of you that are more familiar with turtles! I guess I started to look into it too much!

Not at all. RES's are so variant in their appearance. They can range in color and shade and pattern so much that sometimes even experienced folks have to wonder what the heck they are looking at. Yours is a very normal pale eared one. He will changes many times over in appearance as he grows. Very cute too I might add!!

Thanks! I guess its better to research too much than not at all...
