Adopting an adult Burmese?

RobertPreston Jun 25, 2004 09:53 AM

I am interested in adopting an adult (or a least an 8 foot) Burmese. Are there any recognized organizations that do rescues/adoptions?

Here's a little background. I'm in Georgia, and I work with public health as a health educator. As a part of my job, I visit schools, community groups, afterschool programs, civic clubs, etc., and do presentations, mainly in the area of tobacco use prevention. In my tobacco presentations, I use my snake, which is a 12-foot male Burm. I used to have two; my 16 1/2 foot female passed away in September. I really need two snakes in the rotation so one is always available if a presentation comes up. For example, I'm looking at having to cancel a presentation to a large group of youth early next week because my current snake is in shed. Since July 1 of last year, I have done 63 of these presentations for over 5000 people, mainly small school groups. I say this not to brag, but simply to let y'all know that these programs are a big part of what I do.

I am currently looking for a fairly well-mannered snake, color/morph/sex don't matter, in the 8 foot or larger range. I will buy one retail, but I'd really like to do an adoption/rescue. The male I have now is a rescue; he was an underfed and snappy 6 foot, 15 pound snake when I got him almost four years ago. He's now quite pleasant, and has grown to 12 feet and over 70 pounds. He has no qualms about having hundreds of children touch, pet and poke him repeatedly. Plus, I like the idea of taking an unwanted snake and doing something positive with it.

So, do any of you know of any snake rescue/adoption organizations in my area? I'm in south Georgia, so I'm reasonably close to Florida.

Most every large metropolitan area, regardless of state will have a local herp society chapter. These herp societies will be fully knoweldgable of all rescues and breeders in the area. In fact, here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area where I live, many of the herp society members are themselves, breeders and/or runners of a rescue.

Ya there are a lot for adoption, theres some people who live about 3 miles away from me and they have a lot of burms that are rescued, they run the Colorado reptile humane society.

I was in a similar position not too long ago. I wanted to adopt an unwanted, larger burmese, myself. I have looked and their aren't really any adoption agencies in the southeast for reptiles. I live in Birmingham. What I did was check the local reptile expositions. Surprisingly, there were many people there trying to get rid of some larger burmese pythons. They do sell them, but if they're really just wanting to get rid of them, it's usually for a very cheap price. Other than that, just check local newspaper classifieds, or check online. The classifieds at kingsnake.com are pretty good, or you can check out reptibid. Goodluck.

You can try Arrowhead Reptile Rescue in Ohio. I know they have a couple of burms up there now. They periodically get in some pretty good size ones too I think. I don't know if they ship or not though.

Their web site is : http://arrowheadreptilerescue.org/
