Need letters of Opposition to New York Govenor Pataki for bill S07616

LoneGreyWolf20 Jun 25, 2004 10:38 AM

Bill S07616 has passed both the assembly and senate in NY and is now before the Govenor for his yay or nay. This bill will make "wild animals" illegal to own in NY state, but allow current owners to keep their "wild animals" as long as they get a permit, which in itself is another fiasco. If you are turned down for the permit you are required to turn over your "wild animal" even if you have had said animal for the last 10 years or more. The "wild animals" will include the following:
ALL REPTILES THAT ARE VENOMOUS BY NATURE, PURSUANT TO DEPARTMENT
REGULATION, AND THE FOLLOWING SPECIES AND FAMILIES: BOIDAE FAMILY,
ASIATIC (WATER) MONITOR (V. SALVATOR), NILE MONITOR (V. NILOCITUS),
WHITE THROAT MONITOR (V. ALBIGULARUS), BLACK THROAT MONITOR (V. ALBIGU-
LARUS IONIDES) AND CROCODILE MONITOR (V. SALVADORI) AND ANY HYBRID THER-
EOF, CROCODILIA.

Other animals will include Wolves and their hybrids, Bears and large cats.

Please if you feel that this legislation is wrong, please send your letters of opposition to the Govenor of NY and ask him to veto this bill! Information on how to do this is below. Please keep all letters respectful and in good taste. We need this bill to be vetoed!

The link to email Gov Pataki in the previous email is missing- you can send him your comments via: http://161.11.3.75/

Please act soon- this has already passed the senate and assembly!

I think that you are referring to the NY City law that passed several years ago. This is on the state level, and has been rollign around various committees for some time, and has now passed the assembly and senate. It just needs Pataki's signature to become law.....

I have heard 3rd hand that at one time Pataki had a pet iguana and turtle, so perhaps there is hope...

Also,a staff member of the bill sponsor told me today that they will be amending the language, and not including the entire family boidae, but rather just the largest pythons and anacondas..

We'll see what happens
