hermann's and leopard diet

yellowmz3 Jun 25, 2004 01:05 PM

I was wondering if any of the Ecotherm products (cactus fruities, calcium block and grassland...) are recommended for either of these species.
I've been giving lots of romaine to my Hermanns, who is doing well, but I'd like to vary his diet, any suggestions?
Thanks
Rob

I don't have hermann's so I don't know but for the leopard I wouldn't give him that type of food. If you want varieties, endive is easily found in grocery stores, dandelion is in season so a lot of stores will have them as well or you can grow your own. Other greens that are good for leopards are grasses (timothy, bermuda, milo, etc.), chicory, clover (mine love clovers), opuntia (another one of their favorite), hibiscus leaves & flowers, roses, nasturtium leaves & flowers, pansies, mulberry leaves, turnips, mustard greens, etc. In the summertime I grow all types of grasses, weeds and flowers for my leopards & stars then settle for grocery greens in the wintertime.

I give my Hermann's and marginated the grassland tortoise yummies as an occasional treat, and they do love them. At this time of year, you should be able to find plenty of weeds for your tort. I haven't fed any grocery greens (except sometimes organic dandelion) for months now. Romaine isn't too good as a basic staple; dandelion is much better. Also look for mallow, sow thistle, plantain, hawkbit (mine love the flowers), opuntia cactus, grape leave, mulberry leaves, etc.
