OK, So how big does a Dumeril and BCI get?

tim5580 Jun 25, 2004 01:57 PM

I was seeing full grown dumeril sizes from 4-5 ft on one website to 9-10 ft on the next.
I was seeing full grown boa constrictor imperator sizes from 6-7 ft to 12-13 ft.

I was just wondering how big they would get, because I don't really want a 12 ft snake now. I was looking for an animal that is hardy and with a good temperment, not a ton of money (I was going to get a "regular" one), that gets about 7-8 ft max and it seemed they both were. I was also thnking about a hog island boa too but I couldn't really find out how big they were. So can anyone help me out? Thanks

Tim

I was always under the impression that dumeril's boas range from 5-7ft. As for BCI, their size varies from 4ft to 7 or 8ft depending on where and who they're from. Island BCI, such as Hogs, tend to be smaller.

I try to always go by a general rule and that is: buy from a reputable breeder who can show you the parents of any potential snake you may purchase. Its easy to generalize but all animals vary a great deal in relative size, weight, length, etc. Therefore, what better way to judge than seeing the parentage firsthand. I don't think you can go wrong this way. Just my thoughts.

Those were my two choices also. I've got both right now. A male Dumerils boa which is around 4 years old and a little under 5 feet, and a female hog at about the same age and she's only a little over 5 feet.

The size is going to depend on how much you feed the snake (Obviously!) and on the parents like the previous post mentioned. If you decide to get a Hog Island boa you should
probably be extremely picky about who you buy it from. Most of
the hogs I see are mixed, their heads look just like Columbian
Boas and they should be slimmer and smaller. I've seen some
huge Dumerils, I guess I got lucky with mine. The other thing
is that Dumerils can be very picky eaters. They're gorgeous
snakes though and very mellow. Thanks..........tc
