Well cali is run away with stray animals and the state is a mess right now as it is financal wise. They really don't have the money to provide for all the strays and what not that are brought in to them.Feeding, housing, meds and general care for a lot of these animals isn't cheap. They have no room as it is and get literally 100's and 1000's more each day.
The demand for exotics isn't as high as a demand for your common domestic animals such as dogs and cats. I mean MOST snakes turned in are LARGE constrictors that got to big for their previous owners to handle. I mean some idiot decides to buy a reticulate python when it's a 'baby' and then in 2 years when it's a huge snake decides he can't care for it any longer because he didn't research the snake first, the pet store didn't inform him of the snakes massive size or he simply got tired of caring for the animal. This happens all the time to green iguana's. Pet stores sell the young for like 20 dollars and then the owner can't handle these large lizards.
It's a shame for the animals really but most zoo's won't accept them, you can't release them into the wild and you can't feed or take care of them properly. I don't agree with how many days he changed it to but with all the animals they get daily it might be better off getting put under quickly. I have seen dogs scared to death for days inside the pounds because they are housed next to a bigger dog or a dog that was bred for fights. It's cruel but these animals are better off there then with an owner who couldn't take care of it properly and the animal was living in very poor conditions.
