Couple of questions for someone new to Beardies

ryan976 Jun 25, 2004 05:46 PM

I have three dragons, 2 are about 5-months in age and 1 is about 3-months in age. My question is do i give reptocal on crickets every day, every feeding. Or do i dust crickets only twice a week? I also do have a few more questions. Whats the Difference of UVA Bulbs and UVB? next question is that I keep seeing people that post that theyre dragon is a 1.2 or a 2.0 or .5, what does all that stand for? And one final question, Is it ok if i have 1 male and 2 females in the same cage? they dont act like they want to breed and the male is very laid back. You think it will be ok?

"My question is do i give reptocal on crickets every day, every feeding. Or do i dust crickets only twice a week?"
Calcium sould be dusted once a day, and herptivite 3-4 times a week, When they are full grown your can use the calcium 2-3 times a week and the herptivite 1 time a week.

"Whats the Difference of UVA Bulbs and UVB?"
Technically I can't answer that, but I know that what you're concerned about in regards to lizards is UVB.

"I keep seeing people that post that theyre dragon is a 1.2 or a 2.0 or .5, what does all that stand for?"
male.female.unsexed
So if you have 1 male and 2 females you say 1.2 beardies

"Is it ok if i have 1 male and 2 females in the same cage? they dont act like they want to breed and the male is very laid back. You think it will be ok?"
No.
-Firstly, they don't act like they want to breed now because they are young, but they WILL.
-Secondly, when the male does decide he wants to breed, the females will be FAR too young to allow it to happen. The females need to be at least 15-18 months old and 350 grams to be sure they can produle nice, big, strong, healthy babies. If they breed too young it can present dangers to their health, for both the males and females.
-Thirdly, breeding and raising baby dragons requires a ton of time, space, money, and means to find them all homes. With two females you can double that. If you haven't researched a lot on breeding beardies, and are not fully prepared to take on the responsibilities, do not house the male with the females. Don't even let him near them.
-Finally, if there is any chance the male is related to the females UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they be allowed to breed, EVER.

All that said, you CAN house the females together. There will still be a chance they may not get along later and will need to be seperated, so just keep an eye on them if any dominance issues arrise. Otherwise females are housed together succesfully quite often.
