How old can a female boa be and still breed?

LordDreyfus Jun 25, 2004 06:56 PM

Boa constrictors are pretty long lived from what I've read. Some sources I've come across say that they can live up to 40 years...although that seems a little extreme. I know that if not pushed most females take about 4-6 years to hit what most consider prime breeding size, so you would think they could breed until at least 15?

How old and how large is your oldest female boas?

I am not a breeder, but just wantedto say I know a local guy in my area I was talking to several months ago and he has a female that bred into her late 20s. Does not breed her anymore because the last time she bred there were problems he almost lost her. Still has her, fine now just won't breed her again. I know I did't answer your question, best I could do.

about 14 or 15 years old. We don't know her exact age because we got her from a friend of ours. We do know that he purchased her from another individual back in 1995. She was already around 4 to 6 years old when he got her. He bred her twice over the years he had her and she took for him both times. We got her from him last year and bred her. She's currently gravid and due in July so we'll see. Her last litter was two years ago and she had 40 healthy babies. She's about 9 feet long. I'll have to take some photos of her after she has the babies and builds up some more weight...don't want to disturb the expecting mom LOL.

I had a few bcc that were about 17 years old and I know of rainbows and balls that were still breeding at 22 years.

The snake I just adopted is 12 years old and 8ft long. She has that big broad head you see sometimes. Absolutely beautiful. I hope I can get her to breed, but she is so gentle that I don't care. Will definately make a good snake to show to kid groups. There was another 8 footer at the facility that didn't have a head as broad as hers... I guess she was younger. Since she had a smaller head could she have been "pushed" growing up? I can't post a pic here, but I can email it to you if you are interested.
