Overfeeding?

crazy_ewok Jun 25, 2004 10:15 PM

Is it possible to overfeed a treefrog? (I have gray treefrogs). I was feeding my two today and one of them kept getting ALL the crickets. The other got plenty, but one of them had A LOT. They are small crickets, but how many is too much???

Grays are known for being gluttons, and you should make sure they are not overfed (obesity, impaction, etc). This is exactly why you should be feeding off tongs. Get a pair of hemostats and feed the frogs individually. I keep around 20 adult grays, they get 1 cricket, 2-3xs/week. That is all they need.

Okay. Feeding them too much just this one time won't hurt them, will it?? Also, where can I get hemostats?

No, overfeeding them once will not hurt. I like to vary the amount i feed my frogs from feeding to feeding, maybe one or to crickets one feeding then two days later let them have four or five apiece. good luck

Okay. Thanks to both of you for your advice.

Good points! Don't be afraid to skip a feeding or two either. That can be considered to be enrichment, by more closely replicating what we think their food availability is in the wild. Hemostats, or long tweezers are good for feeding. Hemostats can be found at fishing stores where they are good for pulling hooks out of fishes mouths.
