Hey all

Levine Jun 26, 2004 01:22 AM

Im new here....kinda. I have had a BCI for 2 years now he/she is pushing 6 feet. I have seen a few people post pics of themselves so I thought I would...snake pictures will come once I get a decent camera lol.

Also I have a question. My snake has been on a feeding schedule of one adult rat per month is this too little? Shes very healthy and very muscular, she has a fecal test every 6 months.

Lastly...my vet doesnt know too much about snakes so I can't take her there to get probed I was wondering if there is a growth rate basis on BCI sexing?

Thank you for your help!

I would really try feeding her 2-4 times a month.
Once a month is a little long between feedings, but she does sound very healthy.
Are you not sure of the sex?
Sometimes visual observation is a good way to tell.

Look for highly visable "spurs" on both sides of the cloaca. If spurs are easy to see it's likely a boy...no spurs probably a girl. Tail length will also tell you...a long tail that tappers gradually is probably a boy...while a sudden tapper is likely to be a girl.

so is there a good chance she is a she?

If there are no spurs at all, I would guess she is a girl. Without seeing her in person and probing her, It's still just a guess...but that is what I believe from the information you have given.

Good luck, Chris

I would have to agree with Greg and Chris...

Try offering her food once every two weeks. If she won't feed for you that often than I wouldn't worry about it but most likely, she will. You can also try smaller food items more often so if you wanted to give her food once every two weeks, offer her smaller adults as opposed to jumbo adults.

As for sexing, I just wanted to mention that the visual signs are just indicators or sex and not necessarily 100% accurate. I've come across a few females with relatively large spurs. You might want to try calling around the different Vets in your area and seeing if you can find one who knows how to sex snakes.

Good luck and hope to see some photos of your boa in the near future!
