Gargoyle420 Jun 26, 2004 03:18 AM

Cool rat but I have no idea what kind.I cant believe how much bigger the head is compared to a corn. This guy's colors remind me of a bullsnake.Very mellow and curious.I pulled him out of the bag he came in without a struggle. He is strong and has been exploring his cage for the last hour. Thanks guys for answering me.Work has been keeping me busy and I wont have time to do a little research till Sunday evening...Paul

to have a beautiful, docile snake and not know what it is. I'm sure it's probably frustrating for you too. I certainly can't identify it's species but I can surely say that it's a beautiful animal for sure. Can't wait to see what it is so maybe I can find one exactly like it.

(disclaimer - I am not any good at identifying snakes online.lol)

I would definitely say it is some form of a pit....I am still fairly new to the world of pituophis and can only tell you that it is definitely NOT a northern pine.lol. Maybe either a gopher/bull intergrade BUT you're right about the head...looks odd. I would post your pics in the pit forum and someone there is likely to identify it successfully. I slightly remember pics in the old corn snake book (by McEarchern) of hybrids BUT I thought it would be highly unlikely in the wild since pits are often much bigger than rats or corns and I just always thought one would eat the other if even slightly different sizes.

Elaphe vulpina gloydi, the Eastern Fox snake, looks quite similar to this guy. Here's a pic of the Eastern Fox Snake:

Here's the website this picture came from: www.oplin.org/snake/fact%20pages/fox_snake/fox_snake.html

Here's a couple of pics of the Western Fox Snake:

And the website they came from: herpcenter.ipfw.edu/index.htm?http://herpcenter.ipfw.edu/outreach/accounts/reptiles/snakes/W_fox_snake/&2

An old acquaintance had one of these beauties as a pet, lovely snake, and they're quite variable in color. Great captives.

>>Well, I think you got a beauty there.
If she is willing to send the bairdi on her dime you should take her up on it.
In the mean time I will put you on the top of the list for for when my bairdis produce young.

I am voting for a mix.....but is it's anal plate singel or divided? To me the head says rat and the color says pitophis. How big is he?
