hey i'm back and spike needs major help.......i need alot of input please

carbonatom13 Jun 26, 2004 11:53 AM

well monday i was posting about my sick BD.....i made him a vet appointment b4 i left and my mom brought him in the next day...the vet says that he has a "cold" (he had been showing signs of an upper respritory infection)....she says that this may have been caused(or made worse) by his recent move into my room. i moved him out of the garage because i thought it was too hot in there (like low 90's ambiant. she thinks that in my room he is getting too much draft from the ac and the fan at night. the vet recommends that he move back into the garage because thats where she keeps her bd's and there fine w/ the hot temps.

to try and clear up the cold he is currently on a round of baytral...and i'm thinking about moving him back into the garage. what do u guys think?????????????

he still isn't really eating although he did kinda poo today (it was runny and smelled horrible), prob cause he hasn't been eating......

i'm gonna start givig him his vitamins again along with ordering a uva uvb bulb.......

any ideas???????

thanks for ur help and sry about my rambling

glenn,
you dont need to move him back into the garage.
my room is like 75 during the day and like 68-70 at night.
i simply put 40w nighttime heat bulbs on them.
what temperature is his basking spot?
what temperature is his cage at night?
also if his stools are runny and smell really really bad then he either ate alot more veggies than insects. or he might have parasites.
First dont feed him veggies for a few days to a week, then if his stools are still like that you might want to have someone preform a fecal examination. if after the little stop in feeding veggies his stools are normal. then feed him veggies again and youll just have to deal with the smell.

the vet says the draft from the fans and the AC are what is causing his illness....also i don't know how he is pooping because he has eatin next to nothing for almost 2 weeks now

he has dropped almost 100 grams since he began his decline

i can't get him to eat anything

any ideas??????

his basking spot is like 105 and his cage dosen't get below 78 even at night....but the draftyness may be causing him the infection in his upper respritory infection

I cover my cge top with a towel and m beardies fine at night

Drafts do not cause URI's....too much moisture, stress, bacteria are usually the culprits....

His temps sounds fine for a well dragon, you might up the temp 2-3 degrees until he's well as warmth will help him.....get a fecal done to make sure he doesn't have parasites as a secondary problem....keep him well hydrated....get some acidopholus and give to him daily until he's been off the antibotics for a couple of weeks and is eating well again. If you have a water bowl in his tank remove it....give him daily or every other day soaks instead.....

no the fan wont cause it.
you need to take him to a QUALIFIED herp vet because he probably has parasites.

jonathan made some good points. why didn't the vet do a fecal to begin wth. that is a basic starting point. he could do a swab of the vent to try and get a sample.

losing 100 grams is not good. It may be time for a force feeding. the acidophaliz is importat too. get some repcal juvie pellets and soak them in waer till it turns to mush. put it in a syringe (no needle) and squirt it in his mouth slowly. you can also use t-rex VGF mixed with water to make a slurry. Get some other inut but I think about 1 cc per 100grams is a good starting point. if he does well with that you can give him more.

BTW, i do not recomend any bulbs at night as it keeps some BDs from sleeping well. a ceramic heater is better.

keeps and breeds BD's (not that i'm calling her well qualified) also she said that if he dosen't get better than he should have nebulizier treatments....to clear up his sinus i think.....is this normal.....and what is the normal treatment for upper respritory system infection???????

i'm gonna start syringe feeding him turkey mixed with his vitamins and good bacteria......and i'll also use the repcal pellets mushed up.....

and just to be sure......should i keep him in my room and just get him a uva uvb bulb or should he be moved back into the fairly warm garage like myt vet says??????

thanks for ur help

keep the temps up and humidiy down. An URI can be treated with Baytril. NO TURKEY. stick with repcal pellets or t-rex dust mixed with water. they are complete foods. nothing else needed (except the acidophalis).

Baytril is not very effective in the treatment of respiratory infections, as it does not penetrate the tissue of the lungs very well.
Tylosin, or Tylan, is not very effective for the treatment of respiratory infections either, though it is known to be very effective for it antiflammatory properties, especially within the large intestine, and is widely used to treat colitis.
I have found Cephalexin to be best applied, when treating serious cases of respiratory infection.
