Loaded question there. What are ya looking for specifically? Digital or film? that'd be the first question. If you are tryin' digital, look into the coolpix series by nikon. Very respectable cameras. Fuji makes a decent one too, just make sure there's some way to do through the lens shots. If you get a rangefinder, macro is about impossible.
If you are going for film, there's hella possibilites out there. SLR's are gettin' relatively cheap now a days. Cannon and Minolta makes a decent SLR set up for around $300, with some macro abilties. If you go old school, like the Minolta X700 (manual everything) there are about eleventy billion ways to do close up shots!
Here's an idea of where I'm coming from. My undergrad minor was photography, and I taught intro to photography to undergrads to pay for my graduate work. I shoot film with my X700, and digital is done with my Nikon Coolpix 900. Both simple, but effective cameras. And remember, if you are just doing web shots, 6 megapixal is like going rabbit hunting with a howletzer.

About a month ago I purchased a Canon PowerShot A70. Retail is about $300, but I got it for around $200 through www.dell.com during one of their sales. As of a couple of days ago Dell had several good digital cameras in their 3 megapixel catagory for under $300. Note: the 3 megapixel makes good prints - if you aren't looking to print pictures though, you can go with fewer megapixels for just posting purposes. The PowerShot A70 is a pretty basic digital camera, easy to use and geared towards the amateur photographer. The zoom and macro work great and I've gotten some really nice shots of my boas (haven't snapped off any pics of the corns yet). A friend of mine just purchased a Canon PowerShot SD100 and has been real pleased with it so far for both closeups using the zoom as well as for taking pictures of her granddaughter.
I looked at the Fuji digital cameras but decided on the Canon after reading some reviews on this website: www.dpreview.com/ Just go to "Reviews" on the left-hand menu and you can look up by manufacturer and model.
Happy hunting!

I'm assuming you'd like to go with a digital camera. Film's fine but digital gives you that immediate feedback.
In addition to dpreview, here's another good site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html.
I've had experience with Canon and Nikon. They're both good but I favour the Canon line.
I would stay away from HP, Epson, Casio and other manufacturers who don't specialize in cameras. Their prices may be good but their lenses aren't that good. Reading reviews really helps. Even big names like Kodak and Olympus have good models and poor ones.
they are the nikon coolpix 3200 and the sony cybershot P72 any recommendations??? both 229.99... Chris.........and there was the minolta Z1 for $319.99 also 3.2 mp
...........woo hoooo.......pics soon come
I got lucky and scored a nikon coolpix 4300 from walmart for 260 bucks. It's a 4.1 and takes great pics.It comes with a 150 page user manual so beware.
