Breeder feeder mouse making a constant, strange noise....ideas?

JP Jun 26, 2004 07:10 PM

So, I've got a few mice going to supply my hoppers for my baby balls. I've done this numerous times in the past, and have never had any problems. I've got a female thats making a constant grunting noise..."grnt-grnt-grnt-grnt-grnt.......".

Its pretty much continuous. To make matters worse, she recently had a litter and now a couple of the babies have mysteriously died. I don't know if its related or not. The remaining babies seem perfectly healthy, and have milk in thier bellies.

Any ideas as to whats behind the grunting noise? I figure its some type of respiratory infection but thats just a guess. Thanks for any help!

It sounds like a respiratory infection, especially if the babies are dropping off. I used to try to get these guys through their ills, even fostering babies to other colonies... but then I started having the foster colonies start to die off. Now when I get babies mysteriously dying and momma mice start to huff and puff, I just feed off the whole colony, even when I NEED the babies to grow up to be breeders, better to be short a mouse or two than to be short a mouse colony or two.

Yeah, I just wiped out 45 pans because of that. Isolate and feed her and her litter off. Also make a back up plan in case it spreads. Oh, the pc answer is to take her to the vet and get a culture done, then treat the whole colony with antibiotics. But that kind of defeats the purpose of saving money now doesn't it.
