Problem with Jackson's toenails

Anthonyd Jun 26, 2004 08:18 PM

My male Jackson's just lost another toe nail. I am unsure what happened, but its gone,he is now missing two, one on each back foot. The toe is starting to swell a little. I am putting antibacterial cream on the wound. Is there anything else I can do with out taking him to the vet or spending a lot of money? Is there anything I can do to stop more from falling out?
*On a different note, he is just coming into breeding age and showing interest in my females. But the females never seem to be receptive. Is there any signs that I would be able to see to know that they are ready to breed? I have been putting them together every two weeks (Introducing the females into the males cage)and have had no luck, with either of my two females. Any suggestions?

If the foot is swelling there is probably an infection.... very common in jax. You need to have a vet look at it and probably put him on antibiotics. I'm guessing that if you squeeze the foot you'll see some nasty pus come out.

As for signs the female is receptive: I don't know of any. You just need to keep trying her with the male.

I'd be willing to bet you're keeping him in a screen cage. If you are, that's probably what's pulling out his toenails. They will climb the screen and the toenails get ripped right out in the small holes. My Jax lost 5 toenails doing this, and got a foot infection.

I recommend 1/2 PVC coated wire instead of screen.

I am not sure what my cage is made of, but its not screen that you but in a window or anything with holes that small. It is a type of screen but with 1/4 inch holes. The holes are large and there is no way that a nail could get caught. I just came home one day and 3 of his nails were bleeding. One fell out, no ploblem with infection or swelling, the other is pulled, but still in, and the other just fell out and now is infected.
