I GOT BIT! Should I be worried about infection?

r3ptile Jun 26, 2004 09:30 PM

I knew it would happen eventually, it wasnt due to any SFE's but I was just wondering if it was neccesary to get a tetanus shot or if I could contract some sort of illness/disease/infection from this that could be major. I know that rats can have diseases/rabies so its conceivable that this bacteria also exists in the snakes mouth from eating them. It is a boa. Just some info, he hasnt eaten in about a month, and I put peroxide on the cuts a few minutes afterwards. Does anyone with experience know if I should get a tetanus shot??

I have got bitten before and I was fine . One thing though I always read on the peroxide bottle is never use with animal bites im not sure why but I would listen to them.. Anyone else know what to do ?

Just wash the bite thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap. Since the snake doesn't chew its food the possibilitlies of you contracting rabies or some other harmfull disease is very minimal. Since snakes are cold-blooded they themselves can not host the rabies virus and there mouths are relatively clean. Just wash ot and all should be well. Todd

I think peroxide only hardens fleshy skin like a catalyst for a scab, to keep the wound from being infected. If it was an animal bite perhaps the infectign agent would simply be trapped on the non-benificial side of this scabby wall, meaning you'll get an infection easier. Thats my theory...

It wouldn't hurt to get a tetanus shot, especially if it is a particularly nasty bite. About 12 years ago, I got bitten in the face by a 10 foot Burmese, and a very knowledgeable vet who had years of experiene with big snakes told me to get a tetanus shot. If it's a bite from a small Burmese, it's no big deal -- all the stuff mentioned above will suffice. But if it is a bite from a big one, you might want to consider a tetanus shot.

dude i've been bitten by the worst of them. the worst bite i've recieved was from a 16 ft retic. quite nasty in it's own rights. the most i've done was wash with antibacterial soap and keep the wound clean and it will be fine. unless stitches are needed you dont' need medical attention.
