a dumb question

Justin Stricklin Jun 26, 2004 09:32 PM

Ok, I am not good at gentics at all. It has been a while since I did any sort of punnet square and i can't remember how to do it. If you have 2 albinos how many albinos (percentage wise) would be albino?

A dumb question should require a one sentence answer. This will be a bit longer.

As far as I know, all albino mutant genes in reptiles are recessive to the normal version of the gene. This is not necessarily true for mammals and birds.

Mating two individual that show the effects of the same recessive mutant gene produces babies that all show the effect of the recessive mutant gene. IOW albino x albino produces all albino babies. This is probably the answer you want.

In some species, such as boa constrictors and black rat snakes, there are mimic mutant genes that produce an albino condition. The same effect comes from two different causes (mutant genes). Crossing animals from the two strains of albino produces normal looking babies that are heterozygous for both mutant genes.

Most likely you will get all albino babies. But without knowing the species and strain you are working with, we can't eliminate the possibility that you will get normal looking babies.
