redfoot feeding question -- at what age should i cut back?

unchikun Jun 26, 2004 09:55 PM

while i'm currently feeding junior every day (and pretty much as much as he wants/eats), i know that overfeeding can be a problem for adult tortoises.

i've read on multiple sites that they don't recommend daily feedings as adults. according to the redfoot care sheet here at kingsnake:

After the first year, red-foots can be fed every other day and given calcium twice a week. Two-year old tortoises and adults should be fed twice weekly and given a pinch of calcium at each feeding.

how does this sound to you experienced redfoot owners? any differing opinions?

sounds crazy, but i'm gonna be sad the first day i don't feed junior... wonder how he'll take it, as he's quite accustomed to his schedule.

Adults should be two days on two days off. Until your RF gets to be 6-7 inches feeding 3-4 times a week won't hurt it one bit.

Just make sure that until they get to 6 inches or so they are kept in 70% minimum humidity environment. Until that size in the wild they live in the forest or on forest edges and keep themselves buried much of the time to keep from predators notice. Those areas are generally very humid (70-90%) so if you mimic that pyramiding and their general health is outstanding.

Good luck
