It's best not to use Mercury as a substrate. It's kind of heavy for the cages to support, and there may be medical problems associated with its use. Also, it is very difficult for the snake to crawl around on, as they can't get any traction and they tend to float on the stuff. It's also kind of expensive, compared to wood shavings.
