Substrate Question

drasticplastic Jun 27, 2004 12:12 AM

Has anyone ever used the zoo med reptibark? or is using it? I just put some in my boa's cage and he's not really moving and flicking his tongue about. I was going to put some in the bp's cage as well...just not sure how to read the boa's behavior. Any comments would be appriciated.

I've heard of people who use it. Just can't feed on it. I know we're not to use cedar but I've also heard not to use any softwood - which if I remember correctly the reptibark is made of a softwood (fir I think). Anyway, I prefer to err on the side of caution and tossed my bag before I even used it. A nice looking, humidity loving, easy to clean (but pain to prepare)substrate you can feed on is Bed-a-Beast. You can make it as dry as you want to suit the humidity needs of any species. I use it for one of my kings now (as a test) and will be giving it to some other snakes as well. Right now I use carpet for my BP and love it -just love the way the color green brings out their colors.

Yes, same stuff (basically). It is messy, very dusty when dry, molds when damp (unless you have very good air flow), smells terrible.

Yep, its the same ingredients. However, I have heard of people finding bugs in the EcoEarth (not that common) and I've heard that Bed-A-Beast is is the only one that is baked and puried...no insects and no fertilizers or chemicals.

I tried a rheostat but it couldn't lower my temps enough so I use a thermostat.

The hides in his tank prevent him from being able to get under the carpet (they weigh it down), so there's no need for me to measure (place the probe) under the carpet. I put the probe on top of the carpet over the heating pad.

Hope that helps.
