Can Hognose retain sperm?

ccetony Jun 27, 2004 01:47 AM

My question may be a little off the wall and complicated. Has anyone experienced a western hognose laying fertile eggs on a second clutch after laying an infertile first clutch, but not breeding her after she has laid the first clutch? I have a female that I put with a male and have not witnessed copulation but have witnessed the male courting the female. She laid an infertile fist clutch. (I believe I introduced the male too late.) But it looks that she may lay again and wanted to know the possibility that this clutch maybe fertile.

I could happen. I have seen a snake (not a hog) lay 5 fertile clutches of eggs from one single mating event. Fertility decreased with each subsequent clutch however.
