Could substrate change stress a baby into not eating???

zz Jun 27, 2004 07:06 AM

I recently bought a baby beardie from a pet store (one that I trust to take good care of their animals.)....Before I bought her, I saw her eat! They threw in some crickets and she gobbled a couple of them right up.

When I got her home, I set up her home on paper towels. She doesn't seem to like it. She spends most of her time on her log "basking" (her temps are right after checking and double checking). Of course the crickets hide under the paper towels after about 2-3 minutes. I have noticed a few veggies gone and she is pooping (once/day since Wed).

She just doesn't seem to have a high feeding response to crickets. Yesterday I put a waxworm in there dusted with vitamins and she ate it (but that really isn't a habit I want to start). Well, I think she ate it...it was gone.

I have tried to give her her space and not watch (but she gobbled up crickets while I watched at the store).

I bought her on Wednesday. Today is Sunday and I don't think she is eating right. She barely even notices the crickets go by.

Sorry for my long post...my question is....should I switch to sand (I don't like that idea) or wheat bran (can you use that with babies);it is recommended as a good substrate by "Beautiful Dragons". I am worried about my Fiona.

When a BD of any age is moved from one home to another they may change their eating habbits for up to a week or more. That is why it is sooooo important to get a BD that is healthy enough to survive the transition.

personaly I hate paper towels. as you said crix get under it and hide. this is a pain and its dangerous. Shelf liner is by far the BEST for babies. Definately no sand or any particulate substrate for any baby ever.

Make sure your basking spot is 110-115 and that you only put in a few crix at a time. uneaten crix can also cause undue stress.
