Pseustes Sulpherus finally laid eggs

TomD Jun 27, 2004 09:43 AM

I have been working with these guys for years and finally I got a wonderful surprise. My green female laid 10 eggs. I wasn''t expecting anything and the eggs were probably in the next box for a day before I found them, but they look good. The picture is of my normal female. I just changed computers and I can't find pictures of my green female. When I get some pictures of the green I will post again. For those who don't know about this species it is very similar to the tiger rat (spilotes pullatus) in size, body type, temperament, etc.. All my pseustes puff up when they see me, even the ones I have had from hatchlings. Well wish me luck.

Here is the green phase female who laid the eggs.

That's really cool. Good luck with the eggs, and post baby pictures. I've been interested in Pseustes for a long time (hey, Spilotes used to be congeneric with them, they're so similar) but given how rare Spilotes are in Canada, I'm unlikely to ever see Pseustes here.

i saw some pseustes at a show once but they were the color of lima beans throughout, just solid greenish. are they variable from locale to locale? the guy who had them was selling them as spilotes but they weren't..........

There are different species. The ones that I have bred are Pseustes sulphureus, they are brownish above with bright yellow markings and belly. The ones you saw were probably Pseustes poecilonotus, a bunch of these were imported about two years ago but I haven't seen them since. I also have one other pseustes that I bought as a hatchling. I can't say for sure whether its poecilonotus or shropsherei. When I gets a little bigger hopefully I can tell.
