I am just curious if before posting questions here you asked the person you purchased from.

If not why not?
If so, why ask here?

as a breeder I get questins from my customers all the time. I am happy to help BDs even if they were purchased elsewhere, that's why I post here. But I cant help but wonder why people dont ask the person they buy from more questions or read the care sheets for basic help.

just curious

Do you always take your car back to the dealer or do you look for an independent or second opinion? People will be people.

well if I felt comfortable enough to make a purchase I certainly would consult them.

yes people will be people, just trying to understand why.

I post here, read books, talk to pet stores, talk to breeders, and talk to my friends.

Believe it or not, you will get different answers.Especially about such things as:
substrate
food/water
set ups
what to do about picky eaters
**Not to mention all the breeding questions (I don't plan on breeding mine so I usually gloss over them.)

I like having different opinions. It makes me feel like I am making an informed decision that is best for all.

Good answer... I like that. It's a sign of a responsible owner/future breeder. I would add that a lot of people buy beardies from pet stores. Knowing how little most pet stores actually know about the animals they sell, would we really want people listening to them and only them? I do think people should actually make an attempt at looking at our various care sheets (most people who answer questions here have them on their websites) but if you can't find what you're looking for asking questions is what this is all about.

Who says we don't? What i liek about this place is that you don't get a single biased opinion, you get a wide range of answers from people that have dealt with your same problems. And there's always sumone here able to answer your question, like as of now i believe me breeder is outta the country, wouldn't wanna bother her on her vacation for some simple questions now would i?

that's just how i feel

I post here because the petshop I bought mine from knew nothing.they had very high humidity low temmps and 1.1 were being kept together, when they were like 8 inches1.0 6inches0.1.Talk about unerbreeding they were head bobbing and biting luckily I took him .Also any thing I say about how they keep their reptiles they dont respect and they ignore you.Yesterday I was their and I saw they were keeping 2 adult Leopard eckos.I said are they males or females.the person said I dont know. so she opened the cage and I held them I showed er how to tell and reinforced my answer with the leopard gecko manual.(Their was one male and one female)she didnt care and said they had one that layed eegs and the just let them die(didnt incubate)Also the lepoards were super aggresive which I kne w was odd.I am so mad ,I cant wait until I am old enought towork their and take care of their reptiles rightly

I am not trying to kill your enthusiasm or anything, but I wouldn't work for THAT pet store.... You see, in order to make a TRUE difference, you have to have the commmitment from the management as well.

I did the same as you, I finally worked at pet store and realized that the management was just as cruel to their people as their animals ("Oh, the turtles all have soft shells...move them to the back until they die"; "Oh, you were bit by a Rat because I forgot to tell you their were nursing moms in there...oh well, if you put enough bleach in it you will kill all the bacteria, just don't tell anyone".) Believe me it was the WORST two weeks of my life! (at 16!)

All that said...I admire your search for knowledge and hope you find a pet store whose management can appreciate that!

Well for me it was a case of reading up on a few (well, quite a few) sites on bearded dragons and then went to (sigh) a pet store to buy my BD. I hadn't really come across to many people in my area selling them and didn't want the hassel of anyone shipping it to Canada (which actually the few people I contacted perferred not to because of possible delays at the border). I, of course, have since found someone close here but I've decided that one BD is enough. I lucked out on my purchase and he's been fine and healthy since I got him. Oh, and I didn't find Kingsnake until AFTER I got "Eddie". But as to some of the 'newbie' questions I read here I'm very surprised that they are even asked. I've only had Eddie since Nov and feel I've learned SOOOOOOO much from just lurking and reading here that most of the time if people jsut took the time to read they'd find the answer. Did I mention that owning a book on bearded dragons is a good place to start too??? I can't imagine how the 'experts' here can answer the same questions over and over and still be so nice about it. (hmmm, ok, I'll stop here before someone does a search and points out that I've asked questions that have already been answered---hehehe) Ok, thats my newbie answer for you. Lo.

the search engine here is very broad and I can see why some people would be inimidated by it but I agree with you. just reading and lurking would probably do some folks a world of good
