Carbon Media & Fluval 204

RoyC Jun 27, 2004 12:49 PM

Does anyone here use other carbon media besides the fluval one in their filter? I was thinking about putting Marineland Black Diamond or Marineland Diamond Blend in there to replace the fluval carbons. Will this work? I'm planning to ask my mom to make a pouch so I can pour the carbon in there before placing it in the filter.

You don't have to use the Fluval carbon media. I have found that any carbon media works fine.
However, there is one brand I found in a warehouse aquarium store that works GREAT. The brand is obscure, but it something like Virgin Carbon "The one that pops!" (the say it pops because it makes snapping sounds when you put water on it) I know it sounds silly but I swear by this brand because it keeps my RES tank sparkling clear. If you can't find that particular brand, just look for one that has little dust in it and just make sure you rinse it well before you put it in your filter. Hope this helps a little bit at least!

The only time I have used the actual Fluval brand media replacements in my 2 Fluval filters was when I first bought the filters and the media came included with it. I use a carbon/zeolite mix that I get from Petsmart. I personally like this particular type because the zeolite provides extra ammonia control. It's also easy to find (at a decent sized pet store) filter media bags, which are mesh pouches with a drawstring. And you can reuse them indefinitely. I got my also at Petsmart for a few dollars each.
