New - Adult Gecko

heartsx2 Jun 27, 2004 04:36 PM

Hi - I just brought home my first Gecko. It's an adult and has been fed only crickets at the store. I was thinking mealworms might be easier but I'm not sure. How many and how often (of either)? Do they eat right away and then you should remove anything uneaten afterwards? Or readily leave live worms/crickets in the tank? Sorry, I can't seem to find specific answers to these types of questions in care sheets. Thank you!

I have two 5 month old leos and I feed them about4 large crickets everyday. I supplement with mealworms about 3 each every couple of days and silkworms whenever. I have a couple of nice healthy (fat tailed) geckos.

Okay, I just fed our new Gecko for the first time. Again, he was used to crickets in the store (he's a full grown adult). I put in 4 large crickets and he ate 2 within about 15 minutes. The other 2 are still in there (about an hour later). Is it okay to leave the crickets in the tank if there's only a couple? And assume he'll eat them overnight? Or should anything uneaten be removed? I can't imagine chasing crickets around the tank! I also have a porcelain dish to put mealworms in but I'm worried in case they get out (he could knock them out, maybe...)and causing an infestation problem in the tank. Is it okay to leave mealworms in a dish for snacking? And I've heard everything from feeding adults every other day to once a week. Sorry for the long post and all the questions, but I really want to get this right! I appreciate any help anyone out there can give me!

Thanks,
Denise

I would take out the crickets, they have been known to take a nibble of reptiles. If the mealies can't get out of the dish, I would leave them in. I don't usually have a problem because my babies are cows. I would suggest putting in a couple at a time. If they chow down quickly, add a couple more.
