New to Drys... Have some questions?

ttreptile1 Jun 27, 2004 04:45 PM

Hello all I am about to get a pair of Eastern Indigo's from Steve Binnig and have some fast questions if you don't mind. I am new to Drys but not new to keeping or breeding colubrids and pythons. I recently sold 80% of my breeder python collection to reinivest in some more interesting and more challenging species.

I have a bunch of 48" melamine enclosures that are now empty. I was wondering if I take two set and bolt them end to end (making 2 8' cages) would this be adaquete for easterns? I have red the bigger the better to avoid rubbing and feeding issues. I also wanted to see if any of you would mind posting pictures of your current enclosures? I would love to just eye ball a few to get some ideas. Many thanks in advance!

I think that would be a great idea for your easterns. You didn't mention if this is an adult pair; if so, that is the way I would go. If these are hatchlings, I would raise them in smaller enclosures for the first year or two. I keep my couperi in neodesha and vision cages (4' to 6' cages). Hope this helps. Rob

Yes, my apologies for the vagueness. They are going to be hatchlings. I am also getting a pair of Woma. I will be climbing the walls for the next few weeks until I get them! I am so excited about getting them. So I will have some big old empty cages for a while. No biggie, plenty more room for my Olives & indian for now.

I would raise your hatchlings in a rack type of system, or, something comporable to a 20 gallon long tank. Young indigos need to feel secure and since they are typically finicky eaters for the first 6 months, you are better off raising them in somethng that they will feel secure in. I, too, breed Olive pythons (among a handful of other venomous and non venomous herps...but eastern indigos are my pride and joy). Rob
