Another asking for help..please: Concerning Bullfrogs!

LadyV Jun 27, 2004 09:33 PM

I want to keep it! I am going by what small amount of info I have been able to find about Bullfrogs on the net and common sense. I need accurate information. I live in Louisville, Ky. and it gets icy with snow here in the winter, If I make and outside enclosure for him, what about the winter time? What about proper lightening inside? Will a 55 gallon take accommodate him for his inside home with a larger built outside home, or can he be moved between two homes like that, inside and outside? Is he strictly carnivorous or will he also require any veggies at all? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!

They do not feed until the tail is fully absorbed,
They are strict carnivores
The food needs to be alive and moving
If you use a good supplement then they do not need any special lighting
I would not recommend allowing it outside as you do not know the origin of the frog and you will risk allowing nonnative pathogens to colonize the area(this is potentially the way in which chytrid has been spread about the world).
There are two thoughts on the cage size. The first is to give them a big cage but if there is insufficient cover to feel safe then the large cage allows them to build up enough momentum to possibly break bones or their neck.
The other option is to keep them in a smaller cage that prevents them from getting enough of a jump to do any real damage.

I have two bullfrogs (Rana Catesbeiana) that I keep in a 20 gal. tank. There bodys are about 4" long. They seem to do very well in that tank. I feed them night crawlers and crickets.
Best of luck with yours. I love mine.........Snake_paw

Lady V,
It take up to two years for bullfrogs to grow to adults...

Do they require exercise? I mean, don't they become stiff if they can't move about too much? Aalso, Baby seems to stay in one corner, out of the water for the most part.....is that normal?
