My Everglades saga continues . . .

RobertPreston Jun 28, 2004 09:18 AM

Good news to report: my Everglades ratsnake has eaten since last I posted. However, he has only eaten once, and it's been about 5 weeks since his meal. He ate a single adult mouse, and it remains his only meal in 2004. He is back in his old cage, and he is indoors away from the Burmese. Temperature is in the mid-80's during the day, with a small drop at night.

When a mouse is put in the cage, he acts very interested and stalks the mouse. But in the end, he opts not to feed and crawls into his box. Once again, he isn't acting sick. He doesn't mind being handled, and continues to urinate/defecate normally.

Any suggestions from here? My experience is mainly with boids, and when they go off feed, I don't worry too much. But I'm kind of at a loss this rat snake. I need help.

I would try a rat, or a f/t if you are feeding prekilled. Whatever it is tweek it a little. I have snakes that, coming off a fast will start taking something completely different than what they did going into the fast. And in the spring it seems like many of them will go for smaller than 'normal' prey to start with.
