About 4 days ago my female 3 toed dug a nest and laid some eggs, not sure how many,I caught her when she was laying the last one.The problem is she laid them in a temporary pen that I don't feel that is egg friendly. Here,s the setup,it's about 5ft x 5ft and its on the side of my garage. She laid them close to the garage under the overhang,it's close to a depresion in the ground that hols water for several hours after a hard rain but it does dry up.I made a cage out of 1/2 inch hardware cloth and staked it around the nest to protect it.There is no natural cover or plants in the pen just a hide box.I was wondering if the eggs can take the direct sunlight or if I should put some sort of top on the wire cage I made. They only get the mid day and evening sun.Another problem I'm worried about is ants,I see them crawling arond the pen,not a whole mound jusr a few picking at the scraps that my turtles don't eat,do you think they are a danger to the eggs,if so how can you tell if they are in the nest.I really would like to leave the eggs in the ground to hatch but I don't want them to get ruined if there is something to do to give them a better chance to hatch.I don't have an incubator and don't feel I know enough about digging them up.The ground is pretty hard where she laid them and I feel I would damage them if I tried to digg them up.Sorry for the long message but I really concerned about these eggs.
