Need to cover heat lamps???

boidsntegus Jun 28, 2004 11:27 AM

I am in the process of building my new cage, but I was wondering about whether I need to protect my tegu from the heat lamps? I see lots of enclosures with just bare lamps and heaters, no screen coverings. Does no one have any problems with their tegus burning themselves? I have a couple of ceramic heaters that I don't cover up because they are only on at night, but during the day I sometimes catch my little guy climbing all over them. I just worry he may try the same thing with the lamps. If I can avoid covering the lamps, it will make designing the cage MUCH more simple (if I do decide to cover them, I will have to put some kind of hinged frame around them the allow easy maintainance, which will be a job in itself. Anyway, my question is what are the odds and has anyone had any problems with tegus burning themselves on open ceramice heaters/heat lamps?

It all depends on how high up they are. I too use the ceramic heaters but they are up far enough that I never even concidered them a threat, same with my uv bulb. But then my guy isn't much of a jumper, I guess it all depends how tall a tank it will be.
