Bugs in pine shavings?

MartinWhalin1 Jun 28, 2004 01:16 PM

I can't find anything on this in the archives. Out of a dozen mouse and rat enclosures in my basement, one of them contains pine shavings. I just found it covered in tiny white bugs. I can't tell if they're insects or arachnids. Some of the other enclosures have a few on them but they definitely hatched out of the pine shavings and they seem to be dispersing. Does anybody know what they are? How hard do I need to hit these things? Are they dangerous to my rodents, herps, or birds? Thank you.

Sounds like wood lice. There are 100's of species of wood lice...the most common is what most people call 'rollie pollies'.. They are harmless to your repitles but I suggest keeping the enclosures a little bit cleaner...Any damp/wet pine will definately attract them..they could have also had some eggs on some of the pine before ya put it in the cage...
