Filtering Water in Tanks

I was wondering if anyone has ever split their 10 gallon tank and then tried to filter the water on the one half and been successful.
If so, I'd be interested in hearing how you did it and what products you used.

Yes I have done this before. I just used a basic underwater pump/filter combination. I piled rocks up over it to hide it afterward. However, I eventually had to take it back out because it was just so noisy my frog quit eating and was stressed out all the time. It was also pretty bulky so you have to keep the water a bit deep. Im sure there has to be a better option than this.
