They not however…… These frogs are extremely rare in the wild and by rare where talking less then a hundred. So from an ethical standpoint they really need to be kept hi so newbie’s don’t get their hands on them. The seconded thing to consider here is how they got into the hobby. Now this story what I have put together talking with Rainer Shultz (god I hope I spelled his name right) at IAD a few years ago and from what I have understood from a resent frognet conversation on them. So here we go…..Rainer was the people who rediscover the frog the only other frog was from a preserved specimen that was described by Daily. I don’t recall the exact date but it was in the mid 90’s that Rainer started to collect them and breed them. Well any ways to make a longs story short a bunch of frogs where stolen and illegally smuggled into Germany. Now from what I have gather from frogent the frogs where confiscated and put into locale zoo’s for breeding. Now here is where this gets interesting. The zoo’s breed them and then sold them back to hobbyist over their, apparently making them legal. There are a few people working with them in the US and from what I understand they are being breed here. So hopefully in a year or so we will start seeing some ..convenient as that’s when the next IAD is

Brian,
I have read bits & pieces of the conversation on Frognet, thanks for summarizing it.
Although part of your reply might be taken as putting down less advanced froggers, I hope they do not take it that way. Price is always a consideration when we purchase frogs for future breeding projects. Currently our $ limit is $125/frog. It has taken me 2 years to become comfortable having a frog this expensive in my care. I have friends who are more experienced than I and they would not be comfortable owning a $500 frog.
People don't realize the responsibilities that go with owning such a rare speciman. Who knows how many of them are still left...the few that are in US collections need to be propagated more before being introduced into the hobby for the 'regular' hobbists.
How many on this list have gone looking for a frog in their tank only to find him missing...later finding him dried up like a raisin. I kick myself when I find any frog that has excaped...I don't think I could handle a $500 raisin.

You make a good point. I really dint intend at all to put down any of you newbie’s at all please don’t fell like I am you are the most important part of this hobby without newbie’s the hobby is dead. Just please keep in mind this is an animal on the very brink of extinction we need ever one we can get alive or we will have yet anther speciosies (sp?) on our hands

I agree with you, I hope others understand.
How many people were active on the list when every week of so someone would ask 'what is the most expensive dart frog'? That got kinda annoying.
If the frog is expensive there is a reason for it. Usually economics is the biggest factor. The rarer the frog, the lower the supply the higher the price. Eventually these frogs will trickle down into the average hobbist's hand, but until there enjoy looking at the pictures.

i saw a picture of that frog, and personally, even if it was only a $50 frog, i wouldnt want it
but thats me. the only darts that i like are most any tincs, azuruas, tri-color (becuase of the way they care for tads, and leucs a little.
a little off-topic but i think i read some where that ?azarus? is confined to an area of only 3,000 square feet on the side of a hill along some river. i could have the breed of dart wrong but is this true? and what is the average area of land a dart breed inhabits?
i read that and was very intrugued although ii dont remember where i read it...

I agree, they are not the most beautiful frog...but they are rare. I think people who will buy this frog will be broken down into two categories.
1. The serious collector - these will be the big names in frogs like Todd, Tor & others. They are doing it because they love it.
2. Then the Collectors who have to have it because it is expensive & they can say "I have myst... in my collection" to impress people.

Or me.
I mean purchase them at $500...I might be able to rationalize $200 - then I think they would go into the frogger/breeder category we are in.
