Update on Septic Dragon's Progress

jdplus3 Jun 28, 2004 04:17 PM

Runner, the dragon that was near death a few days ago with two weeping sores on his back, is doing much better. I thought he was dead many times that night. He has been receiving Ofloxacin daily for 4 days and is eating greens, a cricket, and has good activity. The lesions are scabbing over nicely.

I still dont know what happened, but would suspect infected cricket bites.

For reference purposes, Ofloxacin is Floxin Otic, which is used for external ear infections. It has no extra ingredients in it and comes in "singles" which works out to a perfect daily dose for a 3 ounce lizard. He drank it down without any fuss.

You probably know this but for others reading this thread, It would probably be a good idea to use a probiotic like acidophiliz and keep your BD well hydrated too.

Acidophilus is fine but Bene-Bac is better.

Ingredients:

Acidophius

Lactobacillus Acidphilus - Gram positive bacteria

VS

Bene-Bac

Lactobacillus Acidophilus - Gram positive bacteria
Lactobacillus Plantarum - Gram positive bacteria
Enterococcus Faecium - gram positive cocci that naturally occurs in the intestine
Lactobacillus Casei - Gram positive bacteria

It is strictly my opinion that Bene-Bac is better.

Bird Bene-Bac Gel, 15 g

The product is recommended as part of the management program for birds and reptiles subjected to changing environmental or nutritional conditions or after antibiotic therapy. Directions for Use with Reptiles:Growing and Maintenance: 1/2-1 g, 12-24 hours before feeding and 2-12 hours after feeding.Administer by placing the gel on food or directly into the mouth.

Acidophiliz is from pet authority and contains
triple filtered spring water
lactobacillus
acidophilus cultures
yucco shidigera
papaya puree
vitimans a, b1,b2,b6,b12,c,d3,e
calcium
linolenic acid

it is made specifically for lizards

I am no nutritionest so I wont claim that one is better than the other, just compare the right ones and you let me know.

I am sorry I thought you were talking about Acidophilus. I have used both acidophulis and Bene-Bac and have found the Bene-bac to be much more effective and easier to administer as it is a paste.

In the case of "Acidophiliz" I haven't used it so I can't say if it is better or worse and this would be the first time that I am even aware of this product on the market. I am assuming that it comes in a paste of sorts. Reading the ingredients it sounds like a very good product. My only concern would be vitamin A toxicity if given in too high of a dose or administered too frequently.

I will definety try it in the future and see how it compares to the Bene-Bac.

Thanks for pointing it out to me.

He will just sit there on a paper towel as long as he needs to, and will let me clean and dress his sores. He drank his medicine, and his pedialyte syringefuls without any fight (of course he was really really really weak. I try to be the man my dragon thinks I am....
