Caught a little Eastern Garter yesterday...questions

Lovelyleopards Jun 28, 2004 04:42 PM

Okay, so I found a little garter coiled in a leaf yesterday in my yard. Of course, being the snake freak that I am, I HAVE to catch it even if just for a few minutes to observe it. I brought the little guy in and it's peaked my interest as I've never kept anything but rodent-eating snakes. So I decided to set it up in a small tank (5 1/2 gallon) and keep it for a few days and see if I can get it to feed. Should I start with feeder goldfish in a water bowl, or something else? I also noticed that although it's pretty small (maybe 18-20 inches), it's also VERY fat and wide for a garter. Could a female be this small, and could she still be gravid (I live in Alabama)? Or is it just a very successful male hunter? Thanks for all the answers, and I'll try to post a pic of its girth later.

For food you can put it into one of those kritter keepers or something simmilar with a couple of worms, they will be eaten right up. For the fish put them in a dish in the enclosure with water and just wait and see if they are eaten up.
