Rep-Cal Pellets: gutload for crickets?

kephy Jun 28, 2004 05:02 PM

I was feeding my two-thousand some crickets today and I had a thought. I've got this 5lbs worth of rep-cal juvi pellets, enough to last for a long time. I sprinkled a few into the cricket enclosure and they were all over them!

I think this may be a good addition to the foods I give them for gutloading. It must be good stuff if we give it to our dragons. Of course I still give the crickets greens and oranges/apples/potatoes/whatever too.

What do you guys think?

It's really funny to look in there and see those little crickets carrying the pellets around, looking for a safe place to chow on them. It's like they're saying, "MINE MINE MINE!"

I have been using the juvi-pellets for that purpose also. I feed flaked baby food dry and the pellets moistended.
good luck

Always two hours before I feed the crickets I put in a coffee container lid full of moistened pellets both rep-cal and zoomed, and they swarm them. When I feed the crickets I actually see the pellets in the dragons mouth. I know gross, but you would not believe how much a cricket can actually hold in it's gut LOL

I also feed them cricket food from cricketfood.com daily. These are some well fed high nutrient crickets that's for sure LOL

Seems to make them last much longer as well. I know some other high nutrient foods that wipe crickets out, but have not had this problem feeding the above diet.

Is there any reason why you feed the pellets moistened instead of dry? Is it just to get the crickets extra moisture? I'm wondering if I do this if I could cut out the orange/apple/potato slices all together. Seems like moistened pellets would be a lot easier to deal with (no leftover peels, etc.)

Today I took a couple of old jelly jars, tipped them on their sides and filled em w/ moistened pellets. The crickets all crawl up inside the jars and chow down.

I find the crickets eat more of it when it is moist as they can bite into it easier. They really eat a lot of it. I also do it for the moisture for the dragon. The only problem with feeding them this would be the mold issue. I usually feed the other stuff like you leafy greens, oranges, but in the morning I put in the pellets so by the time feeding time rolls around he drickets are gut loaded to the hilt with moistened pellets
