Bull snake biting itself

snakes364 Jun 28, 2004 06:08 PM

A friend has a ten year old, 6 foot long bull snake. At this time of the year a peculiar occurrence has been observed. Right after this snake , ( he thinks it is a female ) sheds, it starts biting its own tail continuously and even thrashes around. Feeding it doesn't stop the behavior. It lasts about 10 days and doesn't happen again until the following June/July shed.

WHAT IS GOING ON ? He is afraid it will break the glass or injure itself.

I had an older ball python that would bite it's midsection all the time.He would bite till he peeled flesh off.He was only 4 feet long and had the same husbandry as my other balls.I thought it may be stress and covered his 20 long with thick black paper you can get at any Wally World but that didnt work either.I ended up putting him down.I will never know what caused it.Ive been waiting for someone to answer your question myself.Im sorry I cant help with your problem, but at least Ive been in your shoes.Im still thinking it was stress related...Paul
