Cage size question...

funnyman527 Jun 28, 2004 06:58 PM

Could two female BD's live together in a 55 gallon tank? or is that just a good size for one? ( i only have on BD as of now, and i'm not sure wut sex it is, but when i find out, i wanna kno whether or not i can get another, and if i need another cage, or what)

Thx

Well, the rule of thumb is 6 square feet of ground space for one, add 2 for each additional. So I guess it depends more on the dimensions of your cage than the gallons. You want it at least 4ft x 2ft, and bigger is even better.

Keep in mind when housing two female beardies together, that they should be the same size. If you have one now that is small you need to get another one that is the same size, and if one gets much bigger than the other seperate them. Size differences can bring up dominance issues, among other things. Also, even if they're the same size there is the chance they won't get along and may need to be seperated anyways. So just keep that in mind.

Good luck.

Oh, totally. The breeder I got my first one from says, "They're like Lays potato chips, you can't have just one."

And she was right. Two years later now I have 2 beardies. Course I got stuck with those moody boys, so it's 2 cages for me!

Thanks, I'm proud of my boys.

Nothing wrong with the normals though. Every beardie is beautiful!

I'm really a beardie newbie, but here is my negative two cents:

I know a full sized beardie would be able to turn around in a 55 gallon aquarium, but it would be a little cramped. I don't think this would be so aweful for the beardie, it would just perhaps be a reason that he might prefer a wider tank.
