Staple other than crickets

pkeck Jun 28, 2004 07:53 PM

Hi, I have two tokay geckos, and I was wondering if there's a feeder that I can use as their primary food other than crickets. This incessant chirping coming from the crickets gut loading tub is driving me crazy...

I did a search through this forum for an answer but couldn't find anything specific to tokays. Do they have any special requirements to keep in mind? I imagine there is either an answer somewhere on this page or on a page somewhere else, so a link to one of those pages would work.

Is there a page anywhere that talks about the specific advantages/disadvantages of the different insects that are available?

hello pkeck, I sell feeder roaches as an alternative to crickets. I myself started using crickets at first and found that the smell combined with the noise was too much for me too handle (and I was in a one bedroom apartment to boot!). Roaches don't have a real bad odor, they don't jump, they don't chirp, they are easier to breed and they live longer. From my experience pretty much any reptile that eats crickets will easily take to a roach. As far as Tokay's having any special requirements, There is none that I know of but perhaps someone else here might have another opinion for you.

Hi...I saw in another post that you are looking to have Turkestan cockroaches for sale soon. Any progress on that? I'm not too thrilled with the idea of having climbing cockroaches (and more importantly, my roommates refuse to have me get those). Do you have any roaches that are not climbers?

Yes, As of the first of July we will be offering the orange head roaches in small quantities and they do not climb glass. We are currently working with a descent size colony of Turkestan roaches but have yet to have any babies from them yet. As soon as those roaches start to reproduce or we find out what we are doing wrong we will have them available as well. We also have some orange spotted roaches that have recently started producing and they do not climb glass either. We hope to be offering those for sale in the near future as well.

Please don't hesitate to call on us for any further questions.

P.S. If any one else out there has had success with breeding the turkestan roaches. Please let me know what is working for you. Any advise is appreciated.

As a follow up to my previous post about the Turkestan Roaches. We did have our first batch of babies born today! We hope to be offering them for sale in about 5 to 6 weeks if they keep producing.

Thanks,

Dan Haas

I feed may Tokays mainly a variety of diverse roach species. I also raise the babies on roach nymphs. Some superworms, Locusts and an occasional pinky or fuzzy mouse adds variety.
In summertime I also give grasshoppers.

I've actually been thinking about trying a pinkie mouse. How exactly do you go about feeding one to them? Do they have to be alive? Both of my lizards lose interest if the prey isn't moving around much. Any tricks on getting them to go for it if is lying still? Thanks.
