Can my Veiled eat little frogs??

ChicoB Jun 28, 2004 08:28 PM

Hi! i am wondering if i can feed some little frogs to my veiled. There are litterally hundreds of little baby frogs in my back yard. I live up in the hills were the streams are relatvly unpoluted so i dont think they have any pesticides or anything on them and there are no bright colors to make me think the frogs are poisonous. Thanks

Personally I would not recommend it, alot of frogs (and or toads) can have natural toxins that make them unappealing to predators and can make them sick. I would do some research of the types of frogs to be sure exactly what you might be feeding them first...

Im sure other people will have more information that this but this is just my 2 cents...

Erin, you know a lot more about frogs than I do but I would certainly tend to agree with you. In the wild a cham would not come in contact with many frogs in trees - except tree frogs and many of them are toxic. Personally I would stay away from them, too.

just my input

Yup! (that and theres no way I could personally feed one animal another that ive had as a pet before, including frogs, anoles, and hissers) ^_^ I think Im safe with crickets though, havent formed any severe attatchments to any so far

Hope you get some more input though!

I wouldn't try it. Most frogs and or toads will secrete a milky, nasty tasting substance from the sides of their bodies if anything tries to eat them. This is their natural defense to predators. Some will also puff up with air making it even harder for anythig to eat them. I have southern toads and they do this when I pick them up. They almost double in size.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't risk my chams health to find out. Frogs don't have to have bright colors to make them poisonous

You would be exposing your cham to possible parasites it will have no resistance to ("New World" sydrome). Even if the frogs weren't toxic there might be bacteria on their skins etc. that could cause problems.

LOL... I've actually tried it
my kids came home with a bucket full of tadpoles, When they started jumping all over the place i put a few in my desktop tank of b.decaryi
i'm not sure but i think they are toads?
I'm not advocating putting wild caught animals with your pet chams
well as i thought the cham made a b-line for the mini toad, it was in the chams mouth about 2 seconds when it spit it out and the toad died this was about a month or two ago the cham is still doing good! but i think i read some where that all toads and frogs have mild to severe toxins secreted from their skin
just thought i'd share...lol
