Croc Skink 101

sallie_keeper Jun 28, 2004 09:33 PM

HELLO I am very interested in getting a pair of red-eye Croc skinks. But before I do, I want to make sure I understand their needs. I have been to the website the is usually recommended for them... read everything I can get my hands on. But I guess I do better chatting with folks that raise them.

Should I get one at a time and train myself in caring for them? Since they are rare to find, I would love to try and breed them, can they live together? Or should they each have their own setup and meet only once a year??

Most of the Tribs I have seen are all wild caught, is anyone breeding them?? Would it be better to raise a captive baby or go for the adults?? What do captive bred sell for?? I have seen adults at expos for 50 bucks. But I would rather have a healthy skink than a cheap skink..

Any thoughts? Suggestions??

Thanks in advance,
Billie

Well, croc skinks can supposedly be teritorial. If you decide to get a pair make sure the tank is large, maybe bigger than a 20L and make sure you have a male and female. Males may fight for females. They aren't fast so it's important to feed them slow moving prey like mealworms, etc. I have heard of people breeding them in captivity but I haven't seen any for sale. These guys are hardy so a WC should be OK. I would recommend quarntine for a few weeks. Let me know if that answered all your questions.

I had a PAIR that fought, after the female laid some eggs. They both had bite wounds. It was too much for my poor female. The male was sick for a while but he's better now. I'm shopping for a new female because they breed in the fall and I want her all acclimated.

"Should I get one at a time and train myself in caring for them?"

There really isn't much you need to do in order to train yourself to take care of these guys. You need to change their water every few days and give them food - that's about it. Lighting is important, too - but not 100% necessary.

"Since they are rare to find, I would love to try and breed them, can they live together?"

Yes. I currently have a 1.2 setup, but I may switch to 1.1 and 0.1 if they start to lay eggs. From everything I've heard, they get aggressive when they lay eggs. So far, however, I have not had any problems.

"Or should they each have their own setup and meet only once a year??"

I think housing them together keeps them social - and more likely to breed. Like I said, I haven't had any problems with mine - but there haven't been any eggs, either.

"What do captive bred sell for?? I have seen adults at expos for 50 bucks. But I would rather have a healthy skink than a cheap skink.."

$50.00 - $60.00 is about right for a healthy crocodile skink.

Thanks for the reply... Sounds great. I hope to find a pair at the next expo I get to go to... They are so awesome looking, I have to give it a try... and with any luck, breed a couple..

thanks again,
Billie
