Nationalism and blind patriotism redefined.....

Fred Albury Jun 28, 2004 09:41 PM

“Nationalism of one kind or another was the cause of most of the genocide of the twentieth century. Flags are bits of colored cloth that governments use first to shrink-wrap people’s minds and then as ceremonial shrouds to bury the dead….In the U.S. we saw it during the Gulf War and we see it now, during the War Against Terror. That blizzard of made-in-China American flags.”

Excerpted from War Talk, Arundhati Roy

This war that we have invested our sons and daughters in for EMPIRE and for empire alone is not going as planned. TORTURE, murder and sexual predation of innocent Iraq citzens......beheadings of American soldiers and citzens.

Suggestion: Go see Michael Moores new movie:Farenheit 9/11. THINK...and question WHY. That would be a good start. Then ask that the troops be brought home NOW before more perish or are beheaded. And ask that we see the caskets of those that have been killed and that those injured are honestly represented in the media. You know...the ones we NEVER HEAR ABOUT?

Damn shame when people line up and dont even question WHY at the cost of our young peoples lives.

Flags are what? Sorry Fred but to those who served our country the "Flag" is a very different thing from our government. To us the Flag means home and our loved ones. Which is why so many of us get pissed when someone insults that Flag. I fly one proudly in front of my house in commenmeration of my friends and family that died so that the "stay at homes that were too smart to serve and who sneer at the men and women who defended them" would have a safe place to live (sarcasm intended).

As far as imperialism goes....I agree. There is no good reason for war except defense. WW2 being a good example. But keep in mind. As we were helped to become a nation by foreign intervention, so we have an obligation to help (when we are asked).

Patriotism is not blind....Try living (like I did for two years) in a dictatorship. It may make you appreciate why some of us are patriotic.

I was against the war on Iraq from the first day.
There are a hundred reasons why this war was foolish.

In my opinion this war was a bigger mistake than the Vietnam war because this war brought peril to the entire western world.

Terrorism is increasing, the radical muslim terrorists get a huge number of new supporters and the entire region is unstable now. Even Saudia Arabia (the most important supplier for our oil) is in Danger being taken over by radical muslims. And then help us God!

As much as I was against this war I say now that it would be even a greater mistake to retreat and leave Iraq now.

Then the radical muslims could do as they please.

In my opinion Bush is the greatest fool of all Presidents that the U.S. ever had.

Please tell me how the Iraq War is for empire and empire alone? has Iraq became a territory? a state? a piece of US owned land? have we stole Iraqi oil? have we taken away their police? their defense? have we stripped the land for our good? have we not started to give back the government to the iraq people? have we not helped to start their economy? have we not been giving back to some what they could never get back anywhere else (Washington post article about US citizens giving 7 iraqis "bionic" arms)? have we drafted their sons/daughters into our military force?

just wondering, but how come YOU don't ask "why" at Michael Moores "Farenheight 911" and "Bowling for columbine"? how come you aren't asking "why" he only gives half the truth? how come you don't ask "why" he doesn't tell you everything?

In those movies he goes a leap further than what he did in "Canadian bacon" (one of the greatest comedies ever). He claims these are documentaries when clearly they are not.
