thought it looked familiar. I have a photo at home somewhere of one the Bronx Zoo varius, I should compare it to your first shot to make sure it is the same one, because it sure looks like it.

What I remember about that day (I think it was my last trip to NYC, four years ago) was some guy standing in front of that display telling anyone who would listen that the sign was wrong, that they were in fact Nile monitors and that he knew because he used to keep one. He refused to believe me when I said that they were lace monitors, as the sign said.

Hi Bob, some of the keepers at the brox have been here, some in a group and one all by herself. The reason I say this is, she was asking all about breeding lacies.

My first comment was, do you have a pair. She said, she thinks so. I hear they have both a young pair and an older pair.

I am hoping that is the older pair, as it looks very much like two males. Please understand, that is only from the picture. But I do not see anything that screams female. Also, as you know, healthy females always lay eggs(over time) That in itself is reason to question its sex.

Now that I have a number of lacies, I am seeing that male and he/male type of thing. When two males are kept together for long periods, one without question, can mimic a female. In that picture, the male is on the right and the he/male on the left. Thanks FR

Frank,

I know that pics can sometimes be misleading.... In person, there is a noticeable difference in both head size and shape, as well as overall size of these animals. I have been visiting the zoo for the past 5 years consecutively, and these two have been together since then... haven't grown much over the years either..

I chatted with Sam Lee briefly the other day via email about thier success with V. prasinus over there, but he was leaving on vacation, and couldn't chat at the moment... He forwarded my message to two of the other keepers there, haven't heard back from them yet... I also asked them about whether or not they've had any other success besides their mertensi and prasinus... they have beccari and varius on exhibit, and probably have other species off exhibit as well.. Still waiting on a reply from them... Here's a pic of one of their baby prasinus...I believe I counted 5 or 6....anyways, tata for now,

I'm going to guess this is a female...it's the only one out on exhibit... they just took a bunch of babies off display in the nursery, boy were they cute.... I can't imagine the arsenal they must have backstage... I saw they had two more clutches of mertensi eggs in the incubator...

...also taken August 2000. FR, as far as the younger pair vs the older pair, I saw some young lacies that were destined for the Bronx a year or so ago, whereas the male in my photos was there when I visited four years ago.

I guess I just figured it was a species you keep. The first thing that came to mind was a lacie, oh well.

PS, I just dug up three more kimmie eggs, but found a few bad ones all dried out, oh well. I flipped a couple I think, so maybe one real good one, but we will see.

hey 'drew,

sorry to hear about your glauerti eggs, how are your others doing??
Yeah, I tried to throw everyone a curveball with that one....hahaha... I'll talk to you later later this week...

bob

vcreations Jun 30, 2004 12:49 PM

the other eggs are 1 month and 10 days in and doing well.

i think that atleast 1 out of this clutch has a good chance, so that is fine.

how are your other kim eggs doing?

yeah, looking forward to that.

JPsShadow Jun 30, 2004 01:15 PM

that curveball was easily seen and hit out of the ballpark. Especially if you know monitors and look at what the picture is and not what someone keeps. hehe

vcreations Jun 30, 2004 01:41 PM

LOL, just playing with ya jody

andrew

JPsShadow Jun 30, 2004 01:44 PM

it's all in good fun.

crocdoc2 Jun 30, 2004 05:56 PM

this one was taken at the Bronx in August 2000. Don't ask why I would take photos of lace monitors while overseas, it's a longish story!
