HELP filling gaps between glass top, and tank.

kyle1745 Jun 20, 2003 11:06 AM

What have you guys/gals used to fill gaps between the lid and the tank top? My 20gal has a nice sized gap across the whole front, and my 29gal has smaller gaps between the lid and the glass top. I need a way to fill these gaps with something. I am currently using a folded piece of no-see-up fabric, which is ok, but a pain to put back in the gap after each time opening the tank. I have heard of some using weather stripping, but what type, and won't it be too thick?

Thanks,

like how big of gaps are you talking about? i had mist coming from the cracks in my lid. i used weather strippinh and it fixed it. it comes in a variety of size, if you use it be sure to get a good brand.

The gaps are not too big. I have the back half of the glass top sealed with silicon so thats not an issue, but the front where the lid meets the edge of the plastic rim on the tank has some gaps. What type of weather stripping did you use? I will have to go to lowes.

i got mine at lowes i think they only carry one brand in many sizes. i got to paxkages of 10" long think ing i would need maybe 12 feet or so but miss calculated by 2 1/2 feet. so i only need 9 1/2 feet, which one package contains 10 feet lol.

any ways what i got was Frostking Rubber foam weatherseal self stick tape in a white package with a yellow strip on top (detailed enough? lol). mine is 3/8" wide, 5/16" thich and 10' long. it has a 5 year guarentee and it says it for all seasons.

i think they had sizes upto 3/4" wide too so they should have a size to fit your needs i had a hard time finding it though and it wasnt the first time i bought it it is a few isles away from the lumber in the isle with the metal door shim things. (i know the name of them but as soon as i went to type it it slipped my mind!).

i think it was only like $3.50 or so.

I got something a little different. It is more for windows, and was a little bit more. So far I think it is working well on my 20gal. It did not work on my 29gal though. Too hard to explain why, but just will not work. I'm still working on the 29gal. Just sick of all the damn flies that get out.

Kyle,

I've filled in 1/4" gaps using silicone. If you don't want the silicone to stick to one of the surfaces, then you can place electrical tape over the surface you want free. I don't know if this answers your question or helps your problem, but that's what I have used in the past. However, if your tank is inhabited, that might be a problem.

Hope this helps
