Variety in Diet Neccessary?

lilbitlizz Jun 20, 2003 11:12 AM

Hey,

My father asked me an interesting question last time I was feeding my boa. Should I change up the diet every once in a while to give some nutritional variety? Or is there a powder or something like some reptiles use on their food for extra nutrition? I have tiger sallies that I alternate crickets, tubifex worms, and guppies for variety, but what would you use on a boa?

I don't beleive it is neccessary (boas live fine on just rats)
but I do believe some variety is probably nice.
You can use:
rabbit
guinea pig
hamster
chicken
dove
quail
heck, in the wild, they eat lizards too!

Word of caution:
Poulty can and does make snake fecal runny and stinky
(not to mention salmonella!)
Also, they can become spoiled and picky, so just make sure
to offer these more as treats but keep the main staple of the
diet the same. I have fed mice/rats of course, and guinea
pigs and rabbits (two of my big girls usually only get
small rabbits (every 20 days or so) except when gravid then
it's back to the rats)
