Eastern Fox Snakes

BBBruno Jun 29, 2004 05:34 AM

Is anyone working with Eastern Fox Snakes at this point? I'd like to compare breeding notes. My success rate has not been exceptional, though I have three eggs incubating as we speak. I've bred them in the past, but to date have never witnessed copulation, or even overtures. They're certainly not Delaware corns; they breed every year like clockwork, 28 eggs cooking as we speak. Hope everyone is enjoying as successful breeding season as your's truly.

I got about ten eggs from each of the two females I got from you. It was plenty cold here last winter and they got a nice long brumation.
I observed a lot of courtship and copulation with the easterns but I used a trick to get the male fired up. I have two male western foxsnakes that were in with a western female for breeding. Those two males really battle it out for the breeding rights of a female. I put my gloydi male in a divided cage with them so he could get a whiff of what was going on and it seemed to really get him thinking in the right direction. I think using a second male to get some rivalry going really works well with the two foxsnake types.
Best regards
John

Hey Buddy,
Glad to see you are having a good year! Here are my thoughts on fox snakes in general: lots of food, cold brumation, long brumation, and like John F. said, multiple males. I'm still hit and miss with breeding mine. Take care. John Meltzer
