Housing Green Anoles and Green Tree Frogs Together-safe???

blimeyzawn Jun 29, 2004 11:44 AM

Hi there,

I've been researching housing green tree frogs and anoles together, but haven't been able to find any definitive information on this. I can't see any reason it would be a problem, but wanted to double-check and see if anyone has any experience with this or knows if the lizards and frogs might stress one another. Also, does anyone know of other animals that would be compatible housemates for either anoles or tree frogs? Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

I was also looking into getting a firebelly toad but then decided against this. It needs a more humid enviorment than the anoles do. Not much more humid though. This is why I supposed they would go ok together. But I did some reading and the firebelly toad emits a toxin from it's skin when it feels threatened. And this could be dangerous to other herps. So I decided against it. I'm not sure if the tree frog does. But you should check. That would be reason enough not to combine them.

Anoles go well with long tailed grass lizards. They're kinda fiesty. But I've read of cases where they go well together. I have 2 anoles and 1 grass lizard and they get along well.

So this is just anactodal - there is no justification that it will work long term but I couldn't find any justifation that it would NOT work long term either. I have a paludarium w/ an anole, Green tree frog and golden tree frog (and some fish down in the water portion. From everything I read I could not find any contra-indication for mixing healthy specimens of these species together in a large enough environment where they would have enough 'personal space' should they like it. There enclosure is well planted w/ plenty of climbing and hiding area. They have only been together now for a year - enough to indicate that there is not any immediate incompatability, but not enough to indicate any long term effects. But on a wholely subjective side note they do not apear to be showing signs of stress- the anole and golden tree frog will change color under stress and their coloration seems to more corelate w/ feeding behavior than anything else.

Sorry I couldn't give an 'official' yes or no but hopefully it helped. Please be sure to think things over 2 or 3 times before actually going through with it.

I have done it. But alway be ready for a problem. The frog will be able to eat the anole if the anoles' body lenght is the about the same as the frogs. I have even seen a frog eat an anole that was larger than its self. So keep that in mind. But if the tank is big and there are plenty of hiding spots and everyone is well fed... Just have another tank ready just in case. Good luck.

Im my opinion you should not be mixing any species unless you are an a)expert with many years of experence with both or b) have a VERY large encloseure (i.e a greenhouse)also, frogs are nocternal (awake at night) and anolies are not, that means the anolie is going to be running around all day while the frog is trying to sleep, and it will stress it out. the reason why this might not happen is that the anolie is too stressed out to run anywhere because it was up all night being disturbed by the tree frog! if you want many, many more reasons as to why this isnt a good idea, post your question up in the tree frog forum, just for the sake of the frog's well being.
