sperm holding and paterninty?

geckogrl6 Jun 29, 2004 11:53 AM

I've heard that leo females can hold sperm for like a year or more. My ? is this, if that's true, and I breed girl A to Boy B in this season, and then breed her to Boy C next season, how can I be sure that next year's babies are really Boy C's??? Am I thinking this thhrough wrong? Also, if a female is bred to 2 diff males the same season, how would you know who fathered who?

holding sperm means that one copulation will produce eggs all season.
IE, the mate once and she'll multiple clutches instead of having to mate everytime for one clutch.
Therefore you'll obviously have to wait until shes done laying and a while after she's recovered before you can mate her again with another male... Then you'll clearly know whos the father of who.

Does that mean she needs a season off between the two? Or a late start to the second season? Can I breed her her to two different males the same season if I don't care about paternity? Or will she refuse to mate if she's holding sperm?

I don't know why you would
so no.
If she's already preggers with one male why would she mate with another male? She'd prolly end up stressed or suffer potential injuries from the male.

If this is your first time breeding i'd suggest you talk to some local breeders or find someone on here with experience.

i didn't actually answer any of your questions.
In short, after mating females will lose a lot of weight and be weak, cuz really who wouldn't be after pumping out 10 eggs. So you don't have to wait seasons so much as you have to wait until their weight is back up. Breeding your females extensively will shorten their lives.

Also i don't know if this could even happen, but if you have 2 males mate a female you won't get "mixed" traits of both males. Cuz that would require 2 sets of chromosomes which result in deformed babies (in humans anyways, ie Down sydrome)

But again ask the experienced breeders before you proceed
